Habits are behaviors we perform on a daily or otherwise regular basis. Certain research estimates that habits make up over 40% of our everyday behavior. Since we spend almost half of our lives on autopilot, learning how to shape and leverage habits to our benefit can greatly impact us
In a nutshell, your health, wealth, happiness, fitness, and success depend on your habits.
Get into the habit of asking yourself, “Does this support the life I’m trying to create?” whenever you find yourself at crossroads, it’ll get easier to make up your mind about which direction to choose.
Here are 5 simple habits that you should include in your lifestyle in order to thrive:
1. Take full control of what you see online — On average, a person spends 3 to 4 hours per day on their phones. The truth is, what you see online, on social media isn’t the reality but our brain doesn’t understand that and makes us loathsome when we see our peers posting something that might affect us. most people allow their phones to make them feel worse instead of better. So, from now on, if you see something online that upsets you or something that doesn’t align with your values, simply unfollow the author, so that they don’t show up on your feed again. Your phone can be a very powerful tool and help you live a better life, but you need to control how you use it. What’s the point of constantly seeing posts you fundamentally disagree with?
2. Start being a little more selfish with your time — It is hard to find the time to do what we want, especially when it comes to cultivating a hobby or maintaining a side hustle apart from the usual, mundane tasks but it is important that you make time for yourself and start doing things that are important to you rather than being part of events you were too scared to say no to.
3. Meditate — Meditation is the most fruitful practice that you can incorporate into your routine. Try to meditate for at least 10–20 minutes at least 5 days a week. In this chaotic world, finding time to sit, be mindful, and listen to your internal dialog reduces the noise throughout your day.
4. Read — I’m not asking you to read all day or even for long hours, just read for half an hour a day, whenever you like, whatever you like, fiction or non-fiction. If you’re a beginner, I’d recommend reading:
- ‘Do epic shit’ by Ankur Warikoo
- ‘Atomic Habits’ by Mark Manson
- ‘The alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho
- ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’ by Mitch Albom
These are pretty easy reads, perfect for beginners. Reading gives you an unhackneyed perspective on a lot many things, it becomes a catalyst for creativity and self-reflection, and needless to say, reading caters you with self-growth.
5. Get some fresh air in the morning hours — For the past couple of months I’ve been cycling in the morning and my day simply gets so much better. I don’t feel lethargic and I’ve also become more productive than usual since I wake up early and have got more time on my hands now. It can be anything, a slow walk at your nearest park, a run, a good sweat session, anything you want. The fresh air that hits you, especially at dawn, makes your day a whole lot better. Just 10 minutes is all you gotta do, I’m sure you can spare at least 10 minutes of your day in the morning.
