Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, has unveiled Bitchat, a groundbreaking messaging app that works entirely offline. Imagine sending encrypted messages to friends nearby without Wi-Fi, cellular data, or even phone numbers—Bitchat makes it possible.
How Bitchat Works
Bitchat uses Bluetooth Low Energy mesh networking to link devices together. Each user’s phone becomes a node that relays messages to other nearby nodes, extending reach up to several hundred meters. Messages hop from phone to phone until they reach their destination—all securely encrypted from end to end.
Key Features
- No Phone Number or Account Needed
Join chats anonymously—no SIM card, email address, or social login required. - Offline Messaging
Keep conversations alive during internet outages, at large events, or in remote areas. - Strong Privacy Protections
Every message is encrypted. Optional “dummy traffic” disguises real conversations, and a one-tap panic mode instantly wipes all stored data. - Decentralized Network
Because there’s no central server, Bitchat is resistant to shutdowns and censorship.
Why You’ll Love Bitchat
- Stay Connected During Emergencies
When cell towers go down or networks get overloaded, Bitchat lets you coordinate with loved ones or first responders. - Perfect for Outdoor Adventures
Planning a camping trip or hiking in the backcountry? You can chat safely without relying on cell coverage. - Ideal for Privacy-Minded Users
No phone number means no phone-based tracking. Keep your location and identity under wraps.
Getting Started
- Download the Beta
Sign up for the limited beta on iOS TestFlight or grab the Android APK from Block’s developer channel. - Create Your Chat
Open the app, tap “New Group,” and share the auto-generated code with friends—no invites, no fuss. - Start Messaging
Once devices are in range, messages flow instantly. Invite new peers into the mesh at any time.
What’s Next?
Future releases aim to add Wi-Fi Direct support for longer range, group voice notes, and richer file sharing—still all without using the internet. As Bitchat evolves, it could transform how we stay in touch when traditional networks aren’t an option.
