2. Exchange of Marriage Agreement –
When the families find out that the kundlis of the bride & groom are compatible, they meet to exchange the marriage agreement. Both the families meet and exchange this agreement on trays that are filled with bananas and other gifts.

A very interesting ritual that is embedded in Tamil traditions is Pallikai Thellichal. Here, nine different types of grains mixed with curd are filled into seven earthen pots and decorated. All the pots are later immersed into the water to feed the fishes. This is an important ceremony which is organised in order to gather blessings for a successful wedding and a married life.
5. Nichayathartham –
This is the day when the bride and groom exchange their wedding rings. This traditional ceremony begins with a unique Ganesh puja which the bride’s family performs. Groom’s family then gifts a new saree, jewellery, and other gifts to the bride. The couple then wears clothes which are gifted by each other’s family.
The groom’s sister will apply kumkum and chandan tika on the bride’s forehead. Bride’s brother does the same for her. Then both of them exchange a garland of fresh flowers. Finally, the bride & the groom exchange their rings in front of their family, friends and other close relatives.
6. Naandi Srardham –
A holy ritual in which both the families worship and pay their respect to their ancestors. Ten brahmins are invited to the ceremony for a South Indian feast by both families. Items like fruits, coconuts, flowers, paan supari, traditional clothes and sweets are then handed over to each of these brahmins. Then they come forward to bless the couple so that they can lead a peaceful married life.
7. Kashi Yatra –
A very fun and exciting ritual in which the groom pretends that he is not at all interested in marrying anyone. Then he decides to go away to Kashi for pilgrimage. The groom receives a walking stick, umbrella and a few other basic essentials for survival.
As he starts walking, the bride’s father stops the groom and persuades him to marry his daughter. The groom will ignore the request at first but will accept it after a few moments. Then he will be taken to the mandap, and the wedding begins.
8. Kanyadanam –
A very similar ritual to the traditions followed in North India. This is the tradition when the bride’s father hands over his daughter to the groom. The groom gives his word that he will take care of her and that he will keep the bride happy, just like his father did. This is a very heartwarming ritual and is one of the most important of all.
Then the daughter sits on the father’s lap when handing her hand to the groom. This symbolises that the small daughter who used to play in her father’s lap is now going away to another man.
9. Sammandhi Mariyathai –
A post-wedding ritual in which both the families exchange gifts between each other as a token of appreciation and friendship for a lifetime. The bride then sets out on her journey from the parental home to the groom’s house. The ceremony stands for the brand new life that the bride will lead from that very day in a brand new house and family.
10. Grihapravesham –
As soon as the bride and the groom reach the groom’s house, the groom’s mother will welcome the couple by conducting a small aarti and bless both of them. She then grants permission to the bride to enter her new home and be one of the members of the family from now. The bride is officially now a part of the groom’s family.
